ABSTRACT
This research studies the use of Technology Roadmapping (TRM) among manufacturing firms. TRM is a graphical and structured approach that assists managers in their strategic planning for technology. It helps companies to survive, especially in turbulent business environments, by providing a focus for scanning the changes in technological advancement and market needs. Global technological advancements can have detrimental effects on firms and they force managers to adopt better methods for more effective management of their technology. However, adopting TRM is not an easy task because of its complexity; moreover, many manufacturing firms are skeptical about using new approaches. Thus, the need to explore the adoption of TRM among managers in manufacturing industries. The questionnaire was designed for data collection through telephone interviews with 200 manufacturing firms. It was found that many managers lack knowledge of TRM and that only a few companies have implemented TRM. Furthermore, the lack of knowledge and experience of TRM is among the barriers for adopting TRM. The research concludes that it is important for manufacturing firms to implement TRM in order to improve their technology planning and business performance.
